James Norman Harrison, age 82, passed away at his home on Saint Simons Island on Sunday, August 6, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.

Norman was one of five children born to Jack and Kit Harrison in Barking, England. He served in the British Army during the Korean War. After the war he met and married his wife, Barbara, and the couple had three children. Wanting to provide the best for his family, they immigrated to the United States in 1968 and made their home on Saint Simons Island. Norman was proud of his adopted land and proudly displayed the American flag at every opportunity. He was a "mans man" who could do anything. He worked as an Engineer for Sea Island Company for approximately 15 years and was also a self-employed handyman who excelled at painting and wallpapering. In his spare time he enjoyed playing golf and throwing darts. One of Norman's greatest accomplishments was volunteering with the Saint Simons Fire Department for 35 years, 10 of which was spent as Volunteer Chief. He was also proud to serve the Civinettes, the wives of the volunteer firefighters, by acting as the Saint Simons Santa Claus from 1971 to 2000.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Jacqueline Jordan, Sylvia Eddy and Rita Edwards.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Wickes Harrison; three children, Deborah Pfeifer (John) of Slidell, LA, Jim Harrison (Hayley) of Orlando, FL and Kathleen Harrison of Lakeland, GA; four granddaughters, Lillian, Julia and Victoria Pfeifer of Slidell and Olivia Quillman of Savannah; a brother, Maynard Harrison (Valerie) of Brunswick and numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces.

A celebration to honor Norman's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. A reception will follow.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Golden Isles and suggests donations to them in lieu of flowers.
